Arecibo Observatory Nestled in the mountains of northern Puerto Rico, the Arecibo Observatory is the worlds largest radar/radio telescope. Here scientist from all over the world use the 20 acre diameter dish to listen to the universe. Visitors view the huge telescope from an observatory platform where its austere metallic symmetry shimmers in dramatic contrast with the dense tropical landscape. Film buffs will recognize this as the set of the Jodie Foster box-office hit "Contact" and home base for SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. However, no screen can do justice to the magnitude of the 600-ton platform suspended over the 20-acre dish set in a sinkhole 565 feet below.
