
Las Cabezas de San Juan
Both casual and serious nature lovers will enjoy a few
hours at the most complete nature reserve in Puerto Rico., Las Cabezas de San
Juan in Fajardo. In that short period of time you can experience every major
tropical habitat unique to the island.
A tour is offered, for the most part in a trolley-type
vehicle. The trip starts at an inviting, wide-verandah visitor center. The
most strenuous activity arrives at the first stop, a 25-minute walk over
elevated paths through a mangrove teeming with fishes, crabs and birds.
You will also visit a rocky beach, a lagoon, and a
lovingly restored lighthouse. Built in 1882 and restored in 1989, the lighthouse
has always stayed active and is now listed as a historic property by the U.S. Department
of the Interior.
At the lighthouse visitors can get sidle up to aquariums
housing lizards, fish and anemones. Visitors also get to climb a spiral
staircase to the top of the building for a bird's-eye view of the property and
its environs. The sparkling surface of the water lapping a crescent-shaped beach
on one side. The beach is called Seven Seas because fishermen say that you
can see water the shades of all the seas of the world.
The Reserve is north of Fajardo on road 987 near las
Croabas. It is open to the public Friday through Sunday but reservations are
required. Tours in Spanish are at 9:00a.m.,10:00 a.m.,10:30 a.m., and 2:00p.m.
English language tour at 2:00p.m.. Admission is $5 adults, $2 children. For

Las Cabezas de San Juan is located 15 minutes car drive
from the Villas.
